Workshop Course
in Deharan Magic

Aruhani by Ruby

Deharan magic is a new system that was inspired by the Wraeththu, a fictional race of androgynous and magical beings. Over the years Wraeththu has attracted a loyal following of fans, many of whom empathised with, or were interested in, the magical aspects of the novels. I thought it would be an interesting experiment to develop a bona fide Wraeththu system of magic.

The only other instance I can think of where this has been done with fictional original material is with H P Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. This has been embraced by Chaos Magicians over the years and a bona fide Cthulhu system has developed. In fact, the creation of magical systems can properly be defined as Chaos Magic. This doesn't mean it involves the conjuring of dark primordial forces or that practitioners have to follow an alarmingly sloping left-hand path. Chaos Magic can be seen as working with the 'stuff' of creation, dreaming up new thought-forms, gods, rituals and practices. Its practitioners perceive the possibility of magic in every walk of life and acknowledge the fact that icons of our culture can be viewed and used as magical entities.

Lunil by RubyThe gods of Wraeththu are called dehara (day-hara), singular: dehar (day-har). The way I view gods and goddesses is as thoughtforms or frequencies of the universal life force. The faces we give them are merely masks that enable us to interact with formless energy. As humans, we work better with pictures than abstract ideas. By giving gods and goddesses faces like our own (or our animals, for that matter), we can connect with what they represent more easily. Also, I believe that when a great many people all invest energy - in the form of thought, intention and emotion - into something, it is fed by that energy and therefore acquires a kind of vicarious independent existence. I think this is what vitalises all the religions and magical systems of the world: human thought, human emotion, human will and human intention. You can look upon the stuff of creation as a kind of modelling clay. You can mould it into certain shapes, with certain attributes, and in deharan magic, this is what you will be doing.Miyacala by Ruby

We are quite capable of creating new systems, thought forms and deities, which have as much relevance as existing systems. After all, at one time, someone, somewhere thought up the existing systems and I have never thought that just because something is new it isn't valid.
